A horticulturist and a trail builder walk into a holler.

Wren grew up in Haw Creek with a grandmother who could name every plant on the ridge and a strong opinion about people who couldn't. She took that up the road to NC State for a horticulture degree, spent five years designing for a big Raleigh firm, and came home the week she realized every plan she drew was for flat land and imported plants — neither of which these mountains have or need.

Sam's education was the Pisgah. Six seasons on Forest Service trail crews, building stone steps and cribbed walls that had to hold through freeze-thaw and flood with zero maintenance forever. Trail work teaches you two things: water always wins unless you plan for it first, and stone set right outlives the person who set it.

Understory started in 2015 with one truck, Wren's plant knowledge, Sam's stone sense, and a bet: that people in these mountains would rather have a landscape that belongs here — native, rooted, built for the slope — than a catalog page forced onto a hillside. Three hundred and forty gardens later, the bet looks safe.

The name? The understory is the layer of the forest where almost everything lives — the dogwoods and azaleas, the ferns and foamflower, the birds and the bees. The canopy gets the attention. The understory does the work. We thought that sounded about right.
